In 2018, 80 Colleagues started an apprenticeship programme at Hastings Direct. Through their apprenticeships, colleagues in Bexhill, Leicester and Homeworkers work on developing their knowledge, skills and behaviours in their role and ultimately, by the end, achieve a nationally recognised qualification. As an Apprenticeship Levy paying employer, Hastings Direct is able to offer a wide range of apprenticeships to colleagues across the business.

When did you join the scheme?

I applied for the opportunity and started in October 2018.

Why did you chose to embark on the apprenticeship scheme?

I had completed my first CII exam and needed the other two for car and home to become qualified. I am a really keen learner, always trying to improve my knowledge and skills to help others.

How have your skills and knowledge developed since you have been on the scheme?

I have had the opportunity to organise a charity event which has helped with relationships outside of the business and have fun whilst fundraising. In terms of knowledge, I have gained better understanding into the insurance industry which in turn has allowed me to deliver better customer service to our customers.

Do you have a career plan once you have completed the apprenticeship scheme?

I would like to be a quality auditor and then expand this to become a Quality Assurance Team Leader.

When did you join the scheme?

I joined the apprenticeship scheme in May 2018 and I’m due to complete my apprenticeship in June 2019.

Why did you choose to embark on the apprenticeship scheme?

Having worked in HR/Recruitment for nearly four years, I’ve always been interested in developing my knowledge and completing a CIPD qualification. When I mentioned this to my manager, she explained that I would be able to complete this via an apprenticeship scheme and I instantly took the opportunity.

How have your skills and knowledge developed since you have been on the scheme?

I’ve learnt a lot about systems, business understanding and my own personal development. I’ve been able to work on different topics that covers HR and broaden my HR knowledge. There is a lot of report writing so my report writing skills are the best they’ve ever been since I left College!

Do you have a career plan once you have completed the apprenticeship scheme?

Once I’ve completed the level 3 CIPD I would like to progress my career either within HR or another area of the business. I would be able to take my knowledge and qualification and put my skills and knowledge into practice where it sits best.
