Tell us about your background and what led you to Hastings Direct?
I moved from the Isle of Man to study BSc Mathematics at the University of Derby in 2016. After graduating, I jumped at the opportunity to join Hastings Direct as a Trainee Actuary and joined the Underwriting Services team in January 2020. I have never fitted in somewhere so quickly and comfortably as I have here, everyone is so friendly and I’m proud to be a part of that open and welcoming culture.
What has been your biggest highlight since joining Hastings Direct?
My biggest highlight so far is the encouragement and support from my team to succeed in completing my exams and achieving a professional qualification from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. It’s really motivating to work towards this qualification whilst in employment and I know I can ask my team anything if I need to.
What have you learnt so far since joining Hastings Direct?
This is a really exciting time for my team and since joining I have constantly been learning new things. We are responsible for producing statistical models used in pricing and predicting claims and their cost to the company. I’m currently learning two different modelling techniques which have really developed my skills in SQL and R coding and also in using specialist software RADAR and EMBLEM.
Would you recommend Hastings Direct to other graduates?
If you are looking for a position where you can be passionate about the work you do and want to be challenged to perform the best you can, then I would absolutely recommend Hastings. In my experience, career progression is an open conversation and the support for growth is second to none. The personal development you will experience here is just as important as the professional, and I know I have made lifelong friends.
